“How are you?”

I asked myself waringly as I peep thru the small slit of my eyes. I have been longing to own new pair of glasses since I broke mine 3 years ago. Yes  3 years. And it’s been that long since I caught myself actively writing blogs and stuff around the internet. It has been 3 years since I thought of making a blog and writing things that randomly pops in my head. It has been 3 years since I got to ask myself, “How are you?”

You see, the funny thing about talking to and asking yourself this question is that you yourself will get to hold of the things that happened in your life. Whether be it on school, work, lovelife, etc., admit it that we sort of forgot to update and talk to ourselves.

Scientist and psychologists say that asking yourself once in a while this weird question can somewhat make you feel easy. We go back. We try to recall. We glimpse the past. We hold back and say “Damn. All this time, i have been this way.” And right up there, we can change things that needs to be changed. We can figure things that have left years unfigured. We remember people that we have taken for granted. We remember events that we have left untouched at the back of our minds. Develop that attitude. It helps.

How To Make Your Med School Life Better

Èclat

IMG_3041

Well, surprise, surprise! A how-to-med-school guide from a med student!

Practically in all the online articles and blogposts I’ve read describing life in Medicine, authors never fail to mention some of these things about med schooling: that it’s no walk in the park, that you will soon have an existential crisis and question why you wanted this in the first place, and that, more often than not, you will feel alone and miserable as you witness your former colleagues and non-med friends step up in life with their overseas travels, new cars, houses, spouse and kids…while you’re just here sitting in front of your desk, laboring the days and nights away poring over Robbins and Harrison to memorize disease names you can’t even spell, wondering if getting that MD title after your name is ever going to be worth all the sacrifices you’re making.

While all those said articles could go on…

A Med Student’s Apology

Toughen up and continue moving forward. #MedLifeItIs

Being a med student is both a mental and emotional upheaval. It is a long, painful process that hopes to create an end-product that can withstand any harsh environment it is thrown into.

To describe it as “hard” might just be the greatest understatement of all.

And for that, we, medical students, apologize to you.

We apologize for the random angry outbursts and the constant irate and disinterested mood. We only had a total of 4 hours of sleep in the last three days combined and work just keeps on coming in like an avalanche bound to trample and suffocate us.

We apologize for the seen-zoned messages, unreturned calls and ignored invitations. It’s just that we had a very long and tiring week and we wanted to spend what’s left of our measly weekend off catching up on sleep and personal care, all without having to sound like a broken record…

The Calling

Did you ever feel like you wanted something in your life yet it seems as if you were left hanging for a minute thinking about the what ifs of it?

April of 2016 marked one of the most momentous event of my life. I finally commenced my college life fortunately with flying colors. BS Biology was a dream back then, but it turned out as a nightmare as well. Our class was so uncertain about our fate whether we could graduate on time or not. But it happened.

May 2016 came and I was really not sure what to do with my life. The degree I already have seems to have been closed by a lot of doors since the only path that we could take are medical career (which requires another schooling), teaching, or research. I was doomed back then. Due to my mom’s appeal, I was forced to find a job which is of course related to what I have finished. I applied in some government agencies (e.g. DENR, DA, DOST, etc.) but no one called me for a follow-up. I even attended series of job fairs just for sure that by the end of the month, I will finally have a work. But still, nothing.

My plan was to work for a short time and then proceed to med school. Ever since I was a child, I sort of imagined myself wearing a white coat and treating my patients diseases. I wouldn’t lie that I was also blinded by the earnings that a doctor has just for an hour of consultation. But more than that, there is really a passion that drives me to proceed to medical school.

It was on the late May 2016. when I decided to apply to Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine. Truth be told, I was really hesitant because financially, we aren’t stable. The only hope I cling unto is the scholarship that ADZU-SOM is offering. Currently I am applying for it and I’m hoping that I will be qualified. I am now in the first year of Medicine. The challenge is really tough. Though we are still on the easy round of the game, I myself don’t want to take it for granted. I browse the web for some articles and do advance readings. I developed that attitude when I was in college back then.

May the odds be ever in my favor. I hope that someday I will be able to finish this graduate course I decided to undertake. There will be lots of hurdles, I know. I am expecting of it. But rest assured that if ever that comes, God (Allah SWT) will be on my back and my family will stay by my side helping me stand up.

This is my calling. I hope I can make it.

Caught in the middle

CHRONOLOGICALLY SPEAKING, I belong to Generation Y, the so-called millennials. We were users of Walkmans, beepers and Windows 95 and suddenly thrust into the amazing world of Skype, iPads and 3D films. So I suppose, like the Australian singer Lenka said, “I’m just a little bit caught in the middle.”

I who grew up with Cedie, Princess Sarah and Batibot. In fact, so significant is the impact of the adorable Pong Pagong on my life that I learned to eat ?kangkong? (swamp cabbage) so I could be his friend.

I was one of those who had the privilege of hunting for fireflies, dragonflies and beetles during vacations in the province. I usually placed them in a large glass jar to show off to my friends, and then set them free to maintain the balance of nature, as my mom said.

I rummaged through libraries and got calluses from copying notes for research assignments even with the advent of the Internet. Most of my school reports were creatively written on manila paper, for it was only during college that I became friends with PowerPoint.

I was able to listen to very good music which were immensely different from the ra-ra-ra-ra-ra songs of the present. I loved the simple, realistic Eraserheads as much as I appreciated the Beatles. Talk about lyrics being more important than rhyme.

I played ?siyato? and ?agawang base? with my equally soiled playmates under the scorching heat of the sun. Laughter coupled with fights, scars and smelly shirts?the memories will forever be etched in my mind.

Yes, I am one person who, more often than not, would like to go back to the past?whenever I can afford to slow down a bit.

Maybe I was really caught in the middle. E-books are becoming popular, but I still favor reading a paperback on lazy Sunday afternoons. PSPs are everywhere, but I think children would do their fingers a favor by playing more proactive sports. I would love my nephews to read with Kapitan Basa rather than memorize all the Pokemons in the world. Family get-togethers are a better idea than peering over someone else?s online profile for hours. And with all honesty, I believe that students will learn more about their lessons if they could do away with the copy-paste practice.

I do not want my generation to be known as spoiled, but the immense power of technology often makes us vulnerable. Most people want to seize all its advantages and refuse to assume responsibility for their actions. This is the reason we have students who graduate with insufficient knowledge; why most children prefer playing Dota to eating dinner with their families; why the Cyberworld is full of hackers, maniacs and scammers; why pop songs are punctuated with the f***s and sh**s; and why half of the world?s problems are unsolved, if not aggravated, by technology. We only have ourselves to blame for not accepting, or refusing to accept, the responsibility that come with using this two-faced commodity.

I call upon my fellow millennials to take advantage of the angelic rather than the monsterrific face of technology. There are zillions of simple ways to do it. Like teaching your sibling to read and understand the assignment he Googled. Like installing useful, educational applications on your cellular phone rather than loading it with scandals. Like getting yourself a good book to read. Like planting a tree as your penance for your massive carbon footprint. Like volunteering for a good cause such as teaching younger kids, or better yet, starting your own cause. Or, perhaps, weaving your thoughts in a write-up like this, sending it via e-mail, praying that it would get published and hopefully ring a bell to all generations and set them off to action.

How to get away with Mondays

There are these things in life that you seriously can’t deny hating it.

Maybe, one of the worst challenges of being a student is not the school works and related stuff. One of the hurdles that each of us need to surpass is waking up early. Well, the worst is waking up early in a Monday morning.

There is this one joke circulating around the web: “if only Monday can talk, it will surely say, ‘What did I do to you to deserve this? Why do you hate me so much?'”. Well, it’s true. Admit it or deny it, we just so hate Mondays. Not to mention that it is the first day of the week, but it is also the day when a need to change one’s body clock and set priorities straight up are both needed. Unfortunately, there are these things we usually hate doing in Monday mornings. Somehow, these things leave us having a bad impression towards others. Here are some ways on ‘How to get away with (my) Mondays‘:

1. Do not wake me up by knocking at my door angrily. I end up being angry too.
2. Deal with it. Whether I slept early or late last night, I still need more sleep in the morning.
3. Do not ask me to do these and that, I do it willingly without someone mandating me.
4. Do not ask me questions that are obvious. Trust me, I WILL NEVER ANSWER YOU BACK.
5. Whether you like it or not, I will end up late in school.

These are some of the things you needed to do to conform with my Monday attitude. Trust me when I say Mondays for me will always be an annoying day. I never am a morning person, so if you want to know me more, then mess up with my routine and you’ll end up with an ‘attitude’. Deal with it.

— 21 Things You Need to Know before Turning 21

(c) Tumblr

1. People are rude. People are stupid. People are weak. People are cruel. People are good. No matter what kind of person you meet all throughout the ride, they will have some impact in you. You will need them, eventually.

2. You DO NOT have to please everybody. You DO NOT have to look good as always in the eyes of the people around you. It’s okay to show your bad side once in a while. You are just a human being— an imperfect one. So stop acting as if you are. Mistakes are always allowed.

3. Some people just drift apart for no actual reason. Don’t chase for them. It’s not your lost anyway. Let them chase for you. Let them miss you and your presence.

4. True friends are hard to find. You don’t have to have tons of them. Few are enough; more than enough actually. Once you’ve found them, value them— a lot for you will never ever find someone like them. Someone who won’t even care if you look horrible at parties or someone who will never get tired of listening to your endless stories.

5. Trusting people is a hard task but sometimes, it’s worth the risk. Just make sure that you
will allow others to have your trust if they deserve it well. Being betrayed is truly devastating.

6. Learn how to listen and not just to talk and talk and talk. People need absorber. Someone who will listen to their rantings with so much understanding and not prejudices. But remember that you have to have a boundary for the toll not to take on you.

7. Study hard if you have the opportunity. There are tons of human beings out there who long to be on your position, thus that makes you so much blessed. But don’t just dwell in studies.
Learn how to have fun at times. At least, aim to graduate and have a degree. It may not be a guarantee for you to have a job but it is one of your edges among others.

8. As early as now, figure out what you truly want in your damn life. If you want to be a doctor, a lawyer, a priest, a writer etc, make moves to be there. Your dreams take time so you better start executing steps to be there.

9. Humanity is still evident no matter how cruel this world is. You can witness is by merely observing around. Don’t lose hope towards it.

10. Always make time for your self. Be drowned in your own thoughts once in a while. Being alone doesn’t mean you are lonely. Most of the times, true happiness can be found when you are in solitude. And mind you, happiness comes from within.

11. Don’t live a life according to other peoples’ standards. Make a life of your own. Don’t mind them because whether you are living a good or a bad life, criticisms are everywhere.

12. Love is a beautiful thing. As well as life. Love doesn’t always mean lovers or couples. Love can actually mean family, friendship, pets, God and happiness. You do not have to fall in love hard to a person for you to have a beautiful feeling throbbing in your chest.

13. Time is powerful thing. Time controls everything but nothing can control it. Value your time. It may sound repetitious but you cannot bring it back once it’s gone.

14. Sow good seeds into others and you will reap better when time comes.

15. There are people who will keep on pulling you down; whether they are insecure or not. Allow annoyanceto be felt. Allow anger to flare up but don’t let that lose the light in you to be there. Prove them that they are not your level for you are so much better.

16. Once in a while you must have to face your fear. Do the things you truly awed since conquering them can bring a new sense of pride in you.

17. Forgive those people who hurt you; who cut you up to the core. God forgives so are you. And don’t you think that forgiveness is one of the best gifts you can give to someone? If you forgive and let go, surely, you will be shrouded with the same happiness as the person you forgave.

18. Some people will abuse you and your kindness. Watch for them. Show your kindness and concern for others but not to the extent that you are already letting them to be abusive. That’s no longer kindness— it’s called foolishness.

19. Be ready for changes since they are permanent. No matter what you do, you cannot control them. Thus, problems and challenges will absolutely come along the way. Just be strong. Don’t forget to pray. Don’t forget about your family and friends. Like storms, they will pass. Like trees, you will be sturdier.

20. It is alright to ask questions for that is a sign that you are willing to learn or want to know something but make sure that your inquires aren’t offensive to other parties.

21. Be mindful of others’ body languages, expressions, words and stories for not all you see or hear are true. Some of them were covered with lies, masked with sugar just for their reputation to be saved or restored. And choose people whom you will confide with your secrets and intentions. Pick carefully the people you look
upon to.

Did you ever experience being obsessed with something that you really want? Well, ask a Fandom and you will get the answer.

Pero grabe men! As in sobra yung selos ko.

Haha. At ayun! At ayun nga. Sobra sobra yung gastos ko 😦 Tas ang mahal pa nung pinabili 😦 Sad nu?

So eto nga yung shirt 😀 Salamat naman kay Pareng @giancarrrlo 🙂 10744652_624282867693822_357830974_n
